Meet Sara Walker: she swapped her buying badge at Revolve for the spotlight as a beloved content creator. With a loyal following and a dedicated crew in her styling sessions, her growth has been as organic as her effortlessly cool West Coast vibe.
Who is Sara Walker? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Seattle ,WA. I swapped out rain for sun when I moved to LA for college at the University of Southern California. I adore LA and never left after college. I now live with my boyfriend, Joe and black lab, Susie. I love fashion and I have worked in the fashion industry for 9+ years in roles across marketing, PR, buying, merchandising and styling. I share my styling tips and fashion content on both Instagram and Tiktok. I have grown a social media following alongside my corporate fashion jobs the past 4 years and most recently took my social media full time. I am a personal shopper, stylist and fashion consultant as well.
Let’s talk about your time as a buyer. Where did you work, and how did you get there?
I worked at Revolve and was on the buying team for 3 years. I started as a FWRD styling intern (FWRD is within the parent company Revolve), then when I graduated college I was a buying assistant then a junior buyer.
What do you miss the most about buying, and what are you glad you’re not doing anymore?
I loved the day to day of buying and connecting with brands. I loved curating assortments as well as seeing the newest collections. I use what I learned in that role in my current job as an entrepreneur. Most of my favorite aspects of buying I still touch on in my current projects!
What exactly does a content creator do? Is it currently your full-time job?
I am a content creator full time! Honestly – I didn’t know either and I am learning something new every day haha
Everyday looks a little different but I am busier than ever! I have various meetings with brands as well as events to connect with other individuals in the community. I am currently hiring an assistant so that has been a very fun journey! I love interviewing and connecting with candidates. I also fashion consult and that has ramped up recently. I have had multiple brands/companies reach out and those are some of my favorite projects because I am helping provide feedback to their future collections. I use some of my buying knowledge as well as my own style to provide feedback.
A content creator also partners with brands for paid content which is very fun because I can be creative and style the pieces my way. I love creating content – it is something I have always loved doing even when I was younger and how my social media organically grew! I love connecting with people across my platform, traveling and curating interesting and organic content.
How do you generate income as an influencer?
A few ways: commission on links, brand deals and content partnerships, substack subscriptions as well as any styling or consulting gigs.
What do you look for in a brand when it comes to partnerships? Do you have a filter?
I only work with brands that I organically use and love. I value my content so it is so much more meaningful creating content when I love the brand/product.
How do your contracts differ across videos, images, stories, and between long-term and one-time jobs?
Every brand is different and looking for something different. I have had partnerships for videos, images, stories and long term contracts. I love each aspect of content creation for different reasons and especially love that every brand has their own flare. I always stay true to myself with my content no matter what brand/deliverables I have. I love being challenged with new and fresh ideas from the brands as well as love having full creative freedom. Both are fun and keep things interesting!
How do you geneHow would you describe your personal style?
Classic with an elevated and playful twist.
What other projects do you have in the works, or what do you have your eye set on?
I have some fun projects in the works that are SO exciting but they are still top secret 🙂
What is the biggest lesson life has taught you so far?
I am learning so much each and every day. This past year has taught me so much, especially to be comfortable in the unknown. I am on a career path I never dreamed of having a year ago. I think I have learned that being open is so important and being able to adapt and grow even when the future is unknown. I feel so grateful for my past work experiences and now being able to translate that into this entrepreneurial role is so rewarding and exciting! I am very grateful!
